Opalia is developing technology to make milk with mammary cells.

  • Opalia’s process uses the cells responsible for lactation in cows. These cells are called mammary epithelial cells and are biologically engineered to make milk.

    Opalia is harnessing the natural power of mammary cells, to develop the major components of milk (proteins, fats, and sugars), without the need for cows. Our milk will be 100% functional. It will foam, melt, bubble and emulsify in all your favorite dairy applications!

  • By developing a technology to produce the major functional components of milk, Opalia’s milk will taste like the real thing. Our goal is to make alternative dairy products that don’t taste like an alternative. With our milk, you will get the same tasty dairy you’ve always loved, without the consequences.

  • Cows are major contributors to global methane and nitrous oxide levels. These greenhouse gases damage our planet’s ozone layer and contribute to atmospheric heat trapping phenomenon that accelerates climate change.

    One-third of earth's ice-free land is required to support the 1 billion+ cows living on our planet at any given time. The deforestation required to grow their feed combined with the overgrazing of these lands can lead to the degradation of soil health and loss of biodiversity.

    Globally, on average, 1466L of green (rainfall), 121L of blue (drinking water) and 106L of grey water (waste) are required to make about 1L of milk. Blue water consumption has the highest impact on the environment and about 50-86% of that is used for feed.

    At Opalia, our milk is developed without the need for cows; that way we produce less greenhouse gas emissions, use less land, and less water than the traditional dairy industry.
